Michael McCarthy

Michael provides local and global market analysis for the Asia-Pacific region, formulates trading strategies and plays a key role in educating clients. With more than 30 years’ experience in the financial markets, Michael specialises in derivative trading.

He was previously head of dealing Asia Pacific at City Index, where he oversaw global market risk, while leading research and education strategies. His previous roles include director of derivative trading at ABN Amro Australia and vice president of equity derivatives at Citi Group.

Michael started out as a booking clerk on the ASX equity trading floor in 1983. Since then, he’s also worked with prominent global investment banks and brokers as a proprietary trader, has managed money market books, conducted foreign exchange arbitrage, and also stood as a market maker in exchange-traded options on the ASX trading floor.

Michael views the global financial markets as a vast interconnected matrix, and in research and commentaries demonstrates a deep understanding of the ramifications of developments in a market and their potential impact on other tradeable instruments. 

He fields media requests both in Australia and internationally, with regular appearances on BBC World, Bloomberg, Channel NewsAsia, Sky Business, and Australia’s national broadcaster ABC.

Michael holds a Masters in Applied Finance, is a former SFE registered representative, ASXD level II accredited and series 7 licensed by SEC NY.
